કોન્ડોમ વિશે એવું કહેવાય છે કે પ્રથમ ઇજિપ્તવાસીઓ કોન્ડોમનો ઉપયોગ કરતા હતા. આ પ્રકારના ઉપાયનો ઉલ્લેખ અન્ય પ્રાચીન સંસ્કૃતિઓમાં પણ જોવા મળે છે, પરંતુ તેનો પ્રથમ લેખિત પુરાવો સોળમી સદીનો છે જ્યારે ગેબ્રિયલ ફેલોપિયસ, એક ઇટાલિયન ફિઝિયોલોજિસ્ટ, જાતીય રોગોથી બચવા માટે કોન્ડોમ તૈયાર કરે છે.
આધુનિક કોન્ડોમની શોધ 1870ના દાયકામાં થઈ હતી અને 1930 પછી લેટેક્સ કોન્ડોમ બનાવવાનું શરૂ થયું હતું. સુરક્ષિત શારીરિક સંબંધ બાંધવો ખૂબ જ જરૂરી છે. તેથી જ દરેક વ્યક્તિ કોન્ડોમનો ઉપયોગ કરે છે. કોન્ડોમ વિશે આપણે બધા જાણીએ છીએ પરંતુ ક્યારેય વિચાર્યું છે કે તેની શરૂઆત ક્યારે થઈ. આજે આપણે જે કોન્ડોમ જોઈએ છીએ તે અગાઉ મળતા કોન્ડોમ કરતા ઘણા અલગ છે.

રબર કોન્ડોમની શોધ 1832 માં ચાર્લ્સ ગુડયર દ્વારા કરવામાં આવી હતી અને 1844 માં પેટન્ટ કરવામાં આવી હતી. પ્રથમ રબર કોન્ડોમનું ઉત્પાદન 1855માં કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું, અને 1850ના દાયકાના અંત સુધીમાં ઘણી મોટી રબર કંપનીઓ રબર કોન્ડોમની અન્ય વસ્તુઓની સાથે મોટા પાયે ઉત્પાદન કરતી હતી.
પ્રથમ રબર કોન્ડોમ 1944 માં બનાવવામાં આવ્યું હતું.
